In November 1922, British archaeologist Howard Carter made history by discovering the nearly intact tomb of King Tutankhamun (KV62) in Egypt's Valley of the Kings. Financed by Lord Carnarvon, the excavation unearthed an unprecedented treasure trove of over 5,000 artifacts that had remained hidden for more than 3,000 years. When Carter first peered through a small breach in the doorway, he famously remarked that he saw "wonderful things"—a collection that included golden chariots, elaborate thrones, alabaster vases, and fully intact royal garments. The crowning jewel of the discovery was the boy king's burial chamber, which housed a nested series of golden shrines and a solid gold coffin enclosing his mummy.
