In around 3,100 BC, the ancient Egyptian kingdom was founded when the distinct regions of Upper and Lower Egypt were finally unified, and it is Narmer who is believed by many to be the one who completed this process of unification. Recording his great achievement on his now-famous palette, the king can be seen about to smite an enemy chief on one side, and on the other two fierce fantastical animals called serpopards are being brought under control in a beautiful symbol of the unification of the Two Lands.

The wall paintings of the tomb of Nebamun, from the prosperous reign of the 18th Dynasty king Amenhotep III (c. 1390–1352 BC), are among the most beautiful examples of ancient Egyptian art. Nebamun is aboard a papyrus skiff, with his wife and daughter, engaged in a favorite pastime of the ancient Egyptians: Hunting birds with a throwstick among the lush papyrus thickets along the Nile. Even in Nebamun’s lifetime, this was already a very ancient motif that carried a deeper meaning: The victory of Order over Chaos.

The mummy portraits are a collection of remarkably lifelike funerary paintings made in the 1st–3rd centuries AD, during Egypt's Roman Period. They are popularly known as the “Fayoum portraits” because it is there that the majority of these amazing artifacts have been discovered. Placed over the faces of the wrapped mummies of the deceased to preserve their features for eternity, they represent a unique cultural fusion combining Graeco-Roman naturalistic art with a purely Egyptian funerary purpose.

Nefertari was the main wife of pharaoh Ramesses II and her tomb with its vivid wall paintings is one of the most beautiful tombs in Egypt. This watercolor copy depicts the queen (left) being led by the goddess Isis (right). Noteworthy is that Nefertari’s husband, Ramesses II, is absent in these scenes, indicating the queen's high status that allowed her to directly interact with the deities without him; such depictions would not be possible for non-royal individuals.

This is a famous scene known as the "Musicians of Amun," showing three female musicians from ancient Egypt playing flute, a lute, and a harp. Music held a central role in ancient Egyptian culture, specifically during religious rituals and festivals instruments. The scene is a reproduction of a mural from the Tomb of Nakht in Thebes, dating back to the 18th Dynasty.

One of the most significant archaeological discoveries ever made, the Rosetta Stone, discovered in 1799 near Rashid (Rosetta), enabled scholars to read the ancient Egyptians’ own words rather than rely on Greek and Roman accounts. Dating to 196 BC, it bears a decree of Ptolemy V inscribed in hieroglyphic, demotic, and Greek. It was by comparing the texts that Jean-François Champollion managed to decipher Egyptian hieroglyphs in 1822.

The Meidum Geese is a celebrated 4,600-year-old painted plaster panel. It depicts six geese in a garden, as a part of a wall painting was found in the Mastaba of Nefermaat and his wife, Itet, at Meidum, from the Old Kingdom (4th Dynasty, c. 2600 BC). The geese were depicted below a scene. It was showing men trapping birds in a clap net and offering them to the tomb’s owner.

The Book of the Dead is an ancient Egyptian funerary text composed of spells, prayers, and illustrations meant to guide the deceased through the afterlife. Among its most famous scenes is the Judgement of Osiris, where the heart of the deceased is weighed against the feather of Ma’at, the goddess of truth and justice. Overseen by Osiris, this ritual determines the soul’s fate—granting eternal life if the heart is pure or condemning it if weighed down by sin. Richly illustrated on papyri and tomb walls, these depictions emphasize moral integrity, divine authority, and the Egyptian belief in a just afterlife.

This icon depicts Saint Mark the Evangelist, the founder of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria around AD 42.  and the first of its unbroken line of patriarchs. The artwork is created in the traditional Coptic style, characterized by large, wide eyes symbolizing spiritual insight and small mouths representing humility and silence.
