The ancient Egyptians had an ambivalent attitude toward hippopotami. This statuette’s blue color and the birds and plants painted on it show the associations with the lush, aquatic, and life-giving environment of the banks of the Nile. Hippopotami are powerful and highly aggressive creatures however, and they represented a constant danger to riverine navigation. Male hippopotami were therefore associated with chaos and destruction, while females had a positive association, and protected the home.
