Mamluk soldiers were a unique military caste of slave warriors who eventually rose to become the rulers of several Muslim states, most notably in Egypt and Syria. Their rigorous training included horse riding, archery, and swordsmanship, as well as Islamic sciences and administrative skills. The Mamluks eventually overthrew their Ayyubid masters and established their own dynasty centered in Cairo. Mamluks were elite heavy cavalrymen known for their skill with the composite bow, lance, and curved sword.
