The scarab beetle symbolized the sun’s power of rebirth and renewal. The scarab rolls a ball of an animal’s dung into its underground den. This was likened to the sun god setting below the horizon, seemingly going below the earth, into the underworld. The scarab beetle was thus pictured pushing the sun disk through the sky. The scarab’s eventual reemergence was paralleled with the sun god’s resurrection—sunrise.
