To preserve the body of the deceased, the ancient Egyptians removed some of the larger organs and embalmed them separately. The standard eventually became to place four major organs in separate jars like these, called “canopic jars.” Each was under the protection of one of the Four Sons of Horus, and its lid had the form of the characteristic head of the god associated with it. Imsety (human) was responsible for the liver, Hapy (baboon) for the lungs, Duamutef (jackal) for the stomach, and Qebehsenuef (falcon) for the intestines.
