The female pharaoh Hatshepsut (c. 1473–1458 BC) was one of the most successful rulers of all ancient Egyptian history. Her most famous monument is her breathtaking funerary temple in Deir al-Bahari, on the west bank of Luxor, where this red granite sphinx was discovered. One of a series that flanked the processional way to the temple, it guarded both it and the processions that walked along it during religious festivals.
