A statue of the god Bes is easily recognized by his dwarf-like figure, exaggerated facial features, and frontal pose, which is unusual in Egyptian art. Unlike most deities, Bes is shown facing forward, often with a fierce expression meant to ward off evil spirits. He was closely associated with protection of the household, childbirth, and music, making his statues popular in homes as well as temples.
