Rameses III Crowned by Horus and Seth
Ancient Egyptian Art
Life and death, Order and Chaos, and Good and Evil: Contrasting opposites feature prominently in ancient Egyptian religion. Horus, the falcon-headed deity in this statuette, was the god of kingship, who thus represented Order. The other deity crowning King Rameses III is Horus’ enemy Seth, a chaotic god of violence who helped the sun god defeat the forces of Chaos. It also symbolizes how a good king was expected to act like both the wise Horus, and, when protecting Egypt, like the powerful Seth.
